Rendering 01 / The Hopper


From the public vantage point, we begin with the hopper where the paths of the public and material flows coalesce. This pedestrian bridge references the coal bunkers of Tacoma, which were wood trestle piers that rail hoppers traversed on the top to offload coal to storage below for ships landing. Here the public moves across and down to the water’s edge.


Section 01 / The Hopper


The industrial hopper is where hog fuel is received, utilizing the industrial slipyard. The gantry crane can offload material from the barge, and the tail end of the yard can receive woodchips to be moved by a hauler into the infeed hopper for storage. The threshold in-between is a landing for the public to site the operation.


Rendering 02 / The Furnace


The combustion chamber sits at the forefront of the power plant as a marker of industry. It offers a framed view back toward the city, or otherwise serves as the lantern of industry. Here the hopper meets the rail line, and the preserved green space is reclaimed for public use.


Section 02 / The Furnace


The power plant generates both heat and power. The excess steam is used to heat the public pool and baths to offer a direct connection between the industrial and the public.


Rendering 03 / The Flue


The flue identifies as the threshold between the industrial realm and the public. This offers the public the opportunity to examine the operations of the industry and safely infiltrate the working machine.

The flue allows the public to move underneath the conveyors and past the smoke stack. Recognizing the mark even clean industry has on the environment. And covered passage through the industrial slipyard to view the offloading of material.


Rendering 04 / The Silo


Where the hog fuel (wood chips) is stored and processed. The community woodshop serves as an extension of this operation.


Section 04 / The Silo


The storage bunker and the community wood shop share this portion of the industrial slipyard. The infeed hopper and storage bunker on the right, and the wood shop and reclaimed material to the left.


Rendering 05 / The Bellows


The public hearth of the project. The slipyard is adapted for public use, framed by the existing infrastructure, offering a framed view back towards the city and inviting public activity in an industrial landscape that is facilitated by the heat source of the power plant.


Section 05 / The Bellows


The water would be captured in the slipyard but appear as though it were and extension of the waterway. The public would be able to view through the void space either towards the city or towards the port. This thesis challenges the idea that public space can inhabit the active working waterfront and offer an open dialogue between the industrial and public realms.
